The March of Dimes and Women in Technology (WIT) are issuing a call for nominations for an award program that recognizes women in the technology industry who have used their experience, knowledge and skills to benefit our community. In addition, one woman-owned or woman-run company will be recognized for extraordinary commitment to local service or philanthropy. The nomination deadline for the seventh annual Heroines in Technology awards is Aug. 15.

The 2007 Heroines in Technology will be honored at an awards dinner Nov. 2, at the Hyatt Regency Reston in Reston. The event will include live and silent auctions. Proceeds from the event will support local March of Dimes programs of research, community services, education and advocacy to reduce the occurrence of birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.

Nominees will be considered from all segments of the technology industry in the Washington, D.C., area, including biotechnology, it service providers, hardware, software, telecommunications, government, medical technology and the Internet.

Ten local nonprofits, human service agencies and towns have been awarded funding under the auspices of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) administered by the Department of Family Services. Those receiving human service funds are: Northern Virginia Family Services for the Loudoun Accessible Medications Program; Loudoun Department of Family Services for a cold-weather shelter; MH/MR/SAS for PATH Shelter funding and Loudoun Volunteer Caregivers for money management/Medicaid application assistance.

The Northern Virginia Senior Olympics will celebrate its 25th anniversary, Sept. 15-27. Opening day ceremonies, Saturday, Sept. 15, 10:30 a.m., will be followed by track and field events at the Thomas Jefferson Community Center, 3501 S. 2nd St., Arlington. A minihealth fair will also be held on opening day from 9 a.m.-noon, sponsored by the Virginia Hospital Center.

More than 20 events will take place at various venues throughout the sponsoring jurisdictions, which include the cities of Alexandria, Falls Church and Fairfax and the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William. Participants must be 50 years of age and live in one of the sponsoring jurisdictions.

Next Level 4 Teens partners with Lansdowne Resort to raise funds for underprivileged teens in Loudoun. A chance to win a one night stay for two with spa treatment for two.
