Child Care
<bt>The Department of Family Services’ Office for Children will reveal the benefits and rewards of owning a home-based child care business at a workshop on Thursday, Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Dranesville Governmental Center, located at 1437 Balls Hill Road in McLean. The event is free and light refreshments will be served.
“Becoming a child care provider allows you to own a home-based business and enjoy a personally rewarding profession,” said Office for Children director Judith Rosen.
At the Aug. 16 workshop, staff will explain how to get the necessary permit to legally operate a home-based childcare business in Fairfax County. The Office for Children provides free training in all aspects of caring for children. At County Chamber
<bt>The Communications Subcommittee of the Tysons Land Use Task Force will hold a meeting on Thursday, Aug. 9, at 4 p.m. at the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce. The Vienna Community Center will be closed Aug. 20 – Sept. 3 for annual building maintenance.

Mid-Year Update
<bt>Local non-profit organization the Neighbors International Foundation (NIF) recently established an advisory board. U.S. Rep. Tom Davis (R-11) agreed to serve as honorary chairman.
Other members of the new advisory board include:
Retired U.S. Army Maj. Maurice Edmonds, president of the 5th Battalion 7th Cavalry Association; George Johnson, Ph.D., who served as president of George Mason University, from 1978 to 1996; Retired U.S. Army Gen. John Wickham, Jr., who was appointed Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army by President Reagan, and served in the position from 1983 to 1987; Wayne Shelton, who served as president of Hughes Information Systems and as a senior vice president of Hughes Aircraft Company from January 1995 to June 1997; and Kaitlin Hill, a graduate of Flint Hill School, who spent her May internship at Neighbors International Foundation helping to organize projects and coordinate volunteers, while learning more about non-profit organizations.
