Sen. Ken Cuccinelli (R-37) has openings for five interns of excellent character and discretion, beginning Aug. 6. Students, age 16 and up, are invited to apply to join Cuccinelli’s small and dedicated State Senate and campaign office 12-20 hours per week. Scheduling is flexible and is arranged through consultation with the senator’s office. Interns work closely with Cuccinelli, his staff and volunteers on a wide variety of key projects. An intern’s day-to-day tasks may include answering telephones, entering electronic data, attending meetings, responding to constituent questions, hands-on campaign activity and assisting with special projects. Cuccinelli supports students requesting credit for their internship through their college or university or for high school government hours. Internships are on a volunteer basis. The Springfield Art Guild and Friends of Green Spring Park seek artists for the 2007 Fall Art Show and Sale and Annual Juried Show at Green Spring Gardens Park, Witch Hazel Lane, Annandale. CUE Bus now accepts SmarTrip cards. The plastic cards are sold by Metro for Metrorail and MetroBus fares and Metrorail parking lot payments. TaxiAccess is a new transportation service that is available to Fairfax County residents with disabilities. TaxiAccess provides subsidized taxi transportation service to county residents who are currently registered users of MetroAccess. Users may purchase up to eight coupon booklets per year for $10 each. Showcase talents and voice opinions on Ted Little's local radio show talent forum Mondays 12-1 p.m. The nonprofit station WEBR, located in Fairfax, has 250,000 potential listeners. Franconia Museum, located in the Franconia Government Center building at 6121 Franconia Road, Franconia, is open Monday, Wednesday and Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Members of the Board of Directors staff the museum and are on hand to take questions and discuss local history. The Franconia Museum is a private, non-profit local history museum dedicated to preserving the past, present and future of the Franconia area in pictures, artifacts and stories. On Wednesdays, Jac Walker is on hand to help Franconia residents begin writing their personal story of growing up in the area.

The Fairfax County Park Authority has trail maps illuminating the network of over 200 miles of trails throughout the county. The maps show the nearest points to access a trail, the location of stream crossings, and provide trail descriptions and distances.

Fairfax County Public Libraries invite area adults and students to participate in the fourth annual "All Fairfax Reads," a project that encourages adults to read and discuss the same book between May and September. This year’s book selection is "His Excellency: George Washington" by Joseph J. Ellis. A reader’s guide to the book is available during the summer at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/library.

The new Fairfax City Regional Library seeks contributions for a 50-year time capsule. The capsule will go in one of the columns near the library’s main entrance during the grand opening events. L’Dor V’Dor: Living Tradition. Local and Israeli photographers have the opportunity to create a better understanding of similarities and differences between the nations by capturing images depicting Jewish tradition, multi-generational living, and the diversity of the Jewish people at the Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia's photo contest. Submissions due Oct. 16, judged by professional photographer and teacher, Lloyd Wolf, the JCCNV fine arts coordinator and fine arts committee. The Fairfax County Park Authority and Fairfax County Animal Shelter offer discounted dog training courses to those who adopt a dog from the county shelter. Northern Virginia Community College students who have been in foster care may qualify for a state financial program to assist them in continuing their education at NVCC. The Foster Care Tuition Grant program is available to high school graduates or those who complete general education development (GED) who were in foster care, in the custody of a social services agency, or considered a special needs adoption when they received their high school diploma or GED. The City of Fairfax Commission for Women has published a brochure as part of its campaign to raise awareness about domestic violence and offer hope to victims. The brochure, "Someone You Know Might Need Help," offers information about where domestic violence victims can seek help, as well as suggestions for those who may know victims of domestic violence.
