Meeting about Family Shelter

News Brief

The West Springfield District Council will hold a community meeting Wednesday, May 2, at 7:30 p.m. about the Katherine K. Hanley Family Shelter. It will be in Room 232 of the Fairfax County Government Center. Kathy Froyd with the Department of Family Services will discuss the shelter and answer question about its operation.

The shelter is expected to mainly serve single mothers with children — elementary-school age and younger. It's being built on 5.7 acres just west of Meadows Farms Nursery in Centreville, between the Hampton Forest and Stringfellow Road intersections on Route 29.

The $6.6 million facility broke ground in April 2006 and should open its doors in late July 2007. The 16,931-square-foot shelter is planned to house up to 20 families — 60 people total.
