The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors on Monday unanimously approved Little Rocky Run's request to establish a Community Parking District (CPD). As a result, oversized and unsightly vehicles will be banned from parking on the public streets in Little Rocky Run's townhouse neighborhood.
As things stand now, Little Rocky Run Circle, Sunset Ridge Road and Braddock Creek Road — all VDOT-owned streets — are chock-a-block with boat trailers, motor homes, campers and other large vehicles. And besides not being particularly attractive, they create potential hazards for pedestrians and motorists alike.
So the neighborhood petitioned the county for the creation of the parking district, and the supervisors gave it a green light. About a dozen residents attended Monday's public hearing, and Little Rocky Run Homeowners Association President Alec T. Monroe spoke.
Afterward, he said the residents "broke into cheers and applauded" the Board's decision. "We're very happy about the approval of our Community Parking District," said Monroe. "I felt really good about that."
The CPD prohibits or restricts the parking of watercraft, boat trailers, motor homes, camping trailers and any other trailers, vehicles with three or more axles, and vehicles weighing 12,000 or more pounds. Public-safety vehicles and school buses used on a regular basis for transporting students are exempt.
"We were hoping for this for a long time," said Monroe. "And after so many years — for this to finally come to fruition is very satisfying. It will probably take effect this summer. I know the people in the townhouses will be really happy to get rid of all that stuff, and it's really gratifying to me to get this accomplished."
