When it came to choosing Stone Hill Middle School's new mascot, the vote wasn't even close. Students who will attend the new middle school this fall overwhelmingly chose the stingray.
"The stingray was a landslide," Principal Rodney Moore said. "It wasn't even close."
All of the fifth-graders who will begin at the school next year and the middle-school students who will transfer from other schools had the opportunity to vote for the new mascot.
"We even had some students from outside the county who will be moving to Stone Hill next year send in their votes," Moore said.
Instead of putting out several school colors for the students to chose from, Moore decided to go with the colors that the new building is being decorated in, green and black with a touch of burgundy.
"I think they are good colors," he said.
The image the students used to choose the stingray mascot will most likely not be the actual mascot displayed at the school, however. Moore has contacted the Monroe Technology Center to see if its design students could create a new image for the school that uses the school colors.
"I am hoping they would be willing to come up with something creative," he said. "If not, maybe I'll even open it up to the students for their ideas."
