McLean AAUW 37th Annual Used Book Sale
<bt>Over the summer members of the McLean branch of American Association of University Women collected more than 40,000 books, videos and CDs. On Friday, Sept. 15, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 16 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, Sept. 17 from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., the McLean AAUW will hold its 37th annual used book sale at the McLean Community Center, located at 1234 Ingleside Ave. The books are sorted according to category, and there will be a "Children's Room" as well as a special "Treasures Room" for books of particular interest and value. On Saturday afternoon there will be special discounts for senior citizens, and on Sunday, the books will be $7 per bag. Admission to the sale is free, and all proceeds from the sale benefit scholarships for women. Every year local scholarships are given to returning women students at George Mason, Northern Virginia Community College and Trinity University in Washington, D.C. Call 703-726-6470.
<sh>Bank Robbery in the Tysons Corner Area
<bt>According to police reports, on Wednesday, Sept. 6 at noon, a branch of Wachovia Bank was robbed. The suspect entered the bank, located at 8117 Leesburg Pike, approached an employee and brandished a handgun. The suspect demanded cash and was given an undisclosed amount of money. The man then fled the bank. No one had any apparent injuries. The suspect was described as white, 30- to 35-years-old, approximately 6 feet 2 inches to 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighed about 190 pounds. He had a goatee and was last seen wearing a light gray sweatshirt and an orange or yellow baseball cap. <sh>Suspect Shot During Carjacking
<bt>According to police reports, Marlon Ian McDougal, 24, of no fixed address in Washington, D.C. forced his way into a business and attempted to steal items from the employees. He was unsuccessful and walked out to the street where he pulled a man from his car and attempted to drive the car away. This occurred in the 6500 block of Arlington Blvd. around 4:50 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7. Three police officers who were conducting a traffic stop nearby, saw the commotion and responded to the carjacking. One of the officers, 39, an 8-year veteran of the department currently working out of the McLean District Station, attempted to stop the suspect. While attempting to arrest the suspect and extract him from the vehicle, the suspect accelerated rapidly which caused the officer to be entangled in the door of the car. The suspect refused to stop and was shot. As soon as the suspect fled, he struck and knocked down a second officer who was not injured. The suspect fled the area and was pursued by City of Falls Church Police Officers Sheriff’s Deputies. A sheriff’s deputy stopped the car by striking it with a sheriff’s vehicle. McDougal was taken into custody at West Broad Street and Virginia Avenue in the city of Falls Church. The McLean District police officer received non life-threatening injuries to his upper body during the carjacking and was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital. The suspect sustained a non life-threatening gunshot wound to the lower body and was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital. The victim of the carjacking, a 55-year-old Falls Church man, was not injured in the incident. The Falls Church officers and deputies were not injured. McDougal was charged with carjacking and burglary with the intent to commit robbery. He remains at Inova Fairfax Hospital under law enforcement guard. Other charges are pending. The officer involved has been placed on routine administrative leave pending an internal investigation.

<bt>Seniors will be competing in backgammon, softball, line dancing, bowling and basketball in the second day of competition in the 2006 Northern Virginia Senior Olympics, Mon., Sept. 18.
