Friends Filling Backpacks

For the second year in a row, The Supporting Friends of The Campagna Center partnered with Chevy Chase Bank and Virginia Paving Company, A Division of Lane Construction Company, to provide Alexandria Head Start students with the necessary supplies for a successful school year. Head Start, celebrating its 40th anniversary, is an early childhood education and development program serving low-income families.

On Aug. 30, members of the Supporting Friends including co-chairs Maureen McGuire Kuletz and Cleatus Burk were joined by TCC board members, supporters, friends and family to fill hundreds of backpacks for some of Alexandria’s most vulnerable children. The group was joined by employees of Virginia Paving Company including Philip Frazier, assistant plant manager, who developed the company’s “Tools for Schools” program and was instrumental in securing the donation. Additional staff members of Virginia Paving also helped to prepare the backpacks: Linda Bolton, Yierou Pa, Liuva Solorzano, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Monahan and Mrs. Philip Frazier.

The effort was so successful that the group was able to donate backpacks and supplies for the children served through Wright to Read, The Center’s literacy outreach program.

For more than 60 years, The Campagna Center has been dedicated to helping children and families in need. The Supporting Friends are advocates for programs, activities and fund-raising events. For additional information, contact Allison Coles at 703-549-0111 or acoles@campagnacenter.org.
