This past summer Kelly Miller Middle School teacher Susan Oliver, an Arlington resident, participated in an Earthwatch education program. Earthwatch's mission is to engage people worldwide in scientific field research and education to promote the understanding and action necessary for a sustainable environment. Educators have an opportunity to apply for a fellowship and every year more than 350 teachers and students receive career training and inspiration on expeditions held all over the world. In August, Ms. Oliver participated in the Manatees of Belize Expedition. This opportunity was made possible through the sponsorship of the Marpat Foundation in Washington, D.C.
Arlington County Board Chairman Christopher Zimmerman has been elected Chairman of the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority. Zimmerman was first appointed to the Authority in 2002, and was elected vice-chairman in 2004. He was elected Chairman Sept. 14 for a one-year term.
