’Tis The Season At Rising Hope

Rising Hope United Methodist Mission Church distributed 225 take-home Thanksgiving dinners on Tuesday, Nov. 21. "We supply them with either turkey or ham and all the fixings," said Laura Derby, church administrator.

That was followed on Thanksgiving day by serving nearly 80 dinners at the church on Russell Road in Lee District from noon to approximately 1:30 p.m. During that event, more than 30 volunteers participate, according to Derby.

On Dec. 17, Rising Hope kicks off its Christmas events with a congregational Christmas Party at 12:30 p.m. following its regular Sunday service led by the Rev. Keary Kincannon. That evening, at 6 p.m., is the annual "Blessing of The Angel Gifts." Those gifts are specifically designated for individuals and families who have indicated certain needs.

From Dec. 19 through 21 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day there is the Rising Hope Christmas Shop where individuals select gifts that have been donated to the church for holiday giving. During the afternoons of Dec. 20 and 21 baskets of food are again distributed to those in need.

Each year a Christmas Eve service is held followed the next day by a three hour, sit down Christmas dinner from noon to 3 p.m. This year marks the second holiday season for the church to celebrate Christmas in its new home on Russell Road.
