It's official, the Town of Vienna will get $198,000 in federal funding to help with the construction of the Vienna Town Green.
The grant, administered by the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development will be applied to the green to be built along Maple Avenue where it crosses the Washington and Old Dominion trail.
Councilmember Maud Robinson asked if accepting this funding might inadvertently encumber the town with additional responsibilities, since the department often puts strict requirements on its funding.
The grant will only apply to the green, and will not have any other strings attached, said Town Attorney Steve Briglia. The council unanimously accepted the grant.
The nearly $1.5 million park, to be built by Sumter Contracting Corp., is to be completed by Mother's Day 2007.
In other park-related events, the town will spend $15,000 for purchase, installation and training of computer software, which will allow residents to register for park and recreation programs on the Internet. "We're very much looking forward to it," said Cathy Salgado, director of parks and recreation for the town.
The system will also allow the town to continue its practice of giving preferential registration to town residents. "We can put, down to the minute, when non-residents can begin to register," Salgado said.
IN OTHER BUSINESS, the council unanimously approved three other spending measures.
* The town will purchase a garbage truck for $152,108 from Mid-Atlantic Waste Systems of Clinton, Md.
* The town will purchase a vehicle-mounted sewer-rodding machine for $55,235 from MSC Equipment or Richmond.
* The town will hire American Disposal Services of Chantilly to provide trash pick-ups at three condo complexes for $15,978.36 per year.
