More than 200 people watched as the teachers and parents of Sully Elementary School played in a soccer game Wednesday, May 10, to raise money for Discovery Park. Final score was Parents 6, Teachers 3. More than $800 was raised. People who wore their Discovery Park T-shirt received free food.
The game was kept friendly and fair by referees Deputy Tom Alpy and School Board member Warren Geurin. Musical highlights were provided by the Sterling Middle School Pep band directed by T.J. Miles and Robert Roche.
The board of directors of Virginia Smiles, a nonprofit organization that provides a link between families affected by cleft lip and/or cleft palate and the medical community that serves these patients, announces the 2006 Virginia Smiles Scholarship Program, which will award a $1,000 college scholarship to a high-school senior or college student in Virginia who was born with a cleft lip or cleft palate, and who is registered to attend a Virginia college in the fall of 2006.
Requirements for the scholarship include a completed Virginia Smiles College Scholarship Application, which is available at www.Virginia-Smiles.org; a 500-word essay describing why he/she is deserving of the $1,000 scholarship from Virginia Smiles; and attendance and participation at the Virginia SmilesÕ Family Picnic July 9, located at Nottoway Park in Vienna, Recipient will receive the award, and must give a 10-minute speech to families of children born with cleft lip and/or cleft palate, and other guests. The speech must highlight the accomplishments of his/her life and how he/she overcame the challenges of being born with a cleft lip/cleft palate.
All entries must be postmarked on or before May 31. Candidates should mail their application and essay to Virginia Smiles, P.O. Box 2891, Fairfax, VA 22031-2891.

The Broad Run High School band boosters present the Spring Symphonic and Wind Ensemble concert. The event will begin with a dinner from Outback Steakhouse, at 5:30 p.m. Advance tickets for the dinner must be purchased by June 1, $15 for adults, $10 for BRHS students and faculty and $5 for children under 6. The final date for SAT testing for 2005-2006 is June 3, SAT and SAT II subject tests, at Park View High School. The tests are administered on nationally standardized dates and require advanced registration.
Students may register online or may obtain paper registration materials from the guidance office of each high school. Registration and study information is available at www.collegeboard.org for the SAT. Students should register at least six weeks in advance of the tests.
Most colleges require SAT for college admissions. Some colleges also require certain SAT II subject tests for admissions or placement. Students should check with all of the colleges to which they plan to apply to determine which tests are required and preferred.
Students usually register for the SAT in their junior year and repeat the test in the senior year.

Peggy Darr, Mary Lowndes and Eileen McKinney are retiring after dedicating their careers to the students at Sully Elementary School. Lowndes has taught in Loudoun for 35 years, with 34 of those being at Sully. Darr has taught in Loudoun County for 33 years, with 31 of those being at Sully. McKinney has taught for LCPS for 21 years and has spent the last 20 years at Sully. A celebration in their honor will be June 11, 2-4 p.m., at the school on Circle Drive in Sterling. Dominion High School's second annual Project Graduation, a night-long celebration of the Class of 2006, will take place June 17, at the high school from 11 p.m.-5 a.m.
This alcohol- and drug-free event, following that morning's graduation exercises, is sponsored by ATLAS and being organized by the parents of underclassmen to provide an exciting, fun-filled, and safe celebration.
The theme will be "A Day at the Beach" and will feature a disc jockey, dancing, games and giveaways. Food is expected to include submarines sandwiches, ice slushies and a chocolate fountain. Door prizes will be drawn all night. A grand prize will be awarded at breakfast.

Shenandoah UniversityÕs May commencement took place Saturday, May 13, and celebrated the achievements of almost 440 candidates for degrees and certificates representing five of the universityÕs six schools.
Sen. John William Warner is the commencement speaker. Honorary degrees were awarded to businessman William F. Brandt, pharmacist John D. Grabenstein, university administrator Masato Murasaki and pharmacist C. Eugene White. May graduation is one of two commencement ceremonies Shenandoah University holds each year, with the other taking place in August.
