The Potomac Almanac won awards from the Maryland Delaware D.C. Press Association, for public service, coverage of the environment, photography, page design, sports and more.
Alex Scofield, Ken Moore, Rich Sanders and Greg Wyshynski teamed up to win First Place for Sports Story for their package on “Baseball Returns to Washington.”
Scofield and Moore collaborated to win second place for Sports Story as well, for “Lifetime of Memories,” about Ellen O’Brien, a four-year varsity basketball player from Walt Whitman High School.
The Almanac also won first place for Sports Page Design. Scofield, sports editor, worked with designer Laurence Foong and Ken Millstone’s photography on their entry, “Running of the Bulldogs.”
Alex Scofield and designer Laurence Foong also took first place for Special Section for “Swishes Granted,” a preview of the 2005 high school basketball season.
Millstone garnered second place for Public Service, for “Chronic Problems with Chronic Care,” a story about the maze of health care issues for young people with chronic conditions.
This is the sixth consecutive year the Almanac has won an MDDC award for public service journalism.
Millstone and Scofield took second place for Environmental reporting for a story on invasive species in the C&O Canal National Historical Park.
Millstone also won second place for Photo Series, for “Hot Fun in the Summer.”
The MDDC Press Awards were announced on Friday, April 28 in Annapolis. The Almanac’s sister papers, The Connection, won 57 awards from the Virginia Press Association. Those awards were announced in March in a ceremony in Roanoke, Va.
