Dear Newcomer,
Welcome to Potomac.
She has a cosmopolitan flair, but Potomac remains a community where we are greeted with a friendly “Hello” in our local shops, have the choice of dining al fresco or in-house at good restaurants, have many places to worship and recreational facilities in abundance.
One of the hilights of the year is the Potomac Day Parade, sponsored by the local Chamber of Commerce. Friends and neighbors line the village sidewalks to catch a glimpse of participants including kids, dogs, horses, antique cars, politicians and fire engines. Hundreds of children queue up for pony and mechanical rides while adults, munching the ubiquitous parade popcorn and cotton candy, look on approvingly.
This, like other gatherings, would not occur if volunteerism were not a significant part of our community. As a newcomer, there is no finer way to meet new friends. Get involved. Join an activity of your interest. There are political clubs, a local theater group, garden clubs, swim clubs, Friends of Great Falls Tavern and citizen associations, to mention just a few. Don’t hesitate to become an integral part of your community and help keep Potomac what it has always been, a place of involvement and many interests.
Potomac may not be the land of white board fences, open space and foxhunting for which it was once so well known, but nevertheless, she has rolled into a unique style of her own.
And, don’t forget, the best way of staying informed of what is going on is by reading The Potomac Almanac.
Sincerely,
Cissy Finley Grant
