<bt>A 19-year-old man died when the vehicle he was riding in crashed into another vehicle Saturday morning. Police were called to the intersection of Backlick Road and Cindy Lane in the Annandale area around 2:15 a.m. on Saturday, July 15 for a car crash. An investigation determined that 23-year-old Yup Yoo Sang was driving a 2006 Lexus LS 350 northbound on Backlick Road with three acquaintances. A 24-year-old Annandale-area woman, driving a 2004 Honda Pilot, was making a left turn from Cindy Lane onto southbound Backlick Road. Sang collided with the other vehicle in the intersection. The Lexus rotated clockwise, traveled off the roadway and rolled onto its roof. The Honda spun clockwise and came to rest in the intersection. Yo Han Baek, who was sitting in the right rear passenger seat of the Lexus, was pronounced dead at the scene. Sang and a 21-year-old Centreville-area man sitting in the left rear seat, were transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital for non-life threatening injuries. <sh>National Night Out
<bt>On the evening of August 1, 2006, Fairfax County will celebrate its annual "National Night Out." In addition to traditional "lights on" and front porch vigils, there will be dozens of crime prevention block parties, cookouts, ice cream socials, flashlight walks, safety fairs and neighborhood meetings in Fairfax County. In addition, Chief of Police David Rohrer will be visiting several participating neighborhoods. National Night Out is designed to: heighten awareness of crime prevention and the combat of drugs and violence; generate support for and participation in local crime-fighting programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and community partnerships; and send a message to criminals, letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. The first National Night Out was introduced in 1984 and has grown steadily in participation since then. Residents in neighborhoods throughout Fairfax County and across the nation are asked to lock their doors, turon on their outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police. If you live in McLean or Great Falls and would like to schedule an event, call 703-556-7750 (McLean) or 703-478-0904.
<sh>ROAD DAWG Camp
<bt>Every day police officers in Fairfax County make a difference in people’s lives by reaching out to the community. It can be as simple as helping to push a citizen’s broken-down vehicle out of the road to assisting an elderly person with home security concerns. Two years ago a group of officers and civilians at the West Springfield District Station took reaching out to the community to a new level by creating the ROAD DAWG (Don’t Associate with Gangs) Camp. West Springfield bike team Lieutenant Mike Reser will lead the summer camp, which will be held July 17-21. Groups providing assistance to the officers of the West Springfield and McLean District Stations include: staff from the Department of Community and Recreation Services; the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board; Department of Family Services and the Fairfax County Public Schools. The children chosen are between the ages of 11-14 and are from neighborhoods with known gang activity. School Resource Officers and principals along with counselors and teachers identified the kids chosen as having strong leadership skills in their communities and at school. ROAD DAWG Camp is designed to enhance existing leadership skills in the kids chosen. Daily activities challenge the children to work as a team, build self-esteem, respect each other and make good decisions.
