The natural beauty of Reston is apparent from the streets on which we commute. But how often do we climb out of the car and into the woods? The glistening lakes and sprawling trees that make our community unique are pleasing to the eye, but real serenity waits for those who experience it up close.
Twin Branches Nature Trail: This trail offers a peaceful look into the natural world of Reston. With a meandering creek and thickly wooded land, the dirt trail runs from Twin Branches Road to the W&OD path behind Sunrise Valley Elementary School. Hikers can expect to see deer, a variety of birds, and the occasional snake under the canopy of this natural retreat.
Lake Audubon: Just across the street from the trailhead of the Twin Branches Nature Trail is Lake Audubon. Take the path that wraps around the north stretch of the lake and watch the sunset play off the ripples in the water. This is also a perfect spot for fishing, boating, or just enjoying the bright colors and cool water breeze.
Polo Club: The trail through Polo Club is deceiving, but that is exactly why it’s a perfect retreat from the business week. Fused with the surrounding neighborhood, this path weaves behind cul-de-sacs and residential streets offering a variety of hidden basketball and tennis courts, playgrounds and open fields perfect for picnics. Visit the path at dusk to see a remarkable display of neon light from the innumerable amount of fireflies that cover the area.
Lake Fairfax Park: Probably the best example of out-door fun in Reston, this park offers a variety of retreats. Often packed with visitors on the weekend, it is still easy to find solitude on any of the trails. To escape the heat of the summer, walk the trails behind the soccer fields and enjoy the cool shade of the forest. The area around the lake is undeveloped park land, so unlike other lakes in the area, this one provides a great natural experience. As an added surprise, it is not uncommon to catch a game of cricket being played on the west side of the park.
Walker Nature Trail: This trail is located off of Glade Road and provides a unique and informative experience. Start at the information kiosk and get acquainted with the natural surroundings. The trails take off on either side of the road and are the perfect size to help wind-down a long day at work.
