The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington is planning a trip to Israel for seniors, Nov. 8–19. The trip will provide off-the-beaten-path adventures and will offer a deeper understanding of the Jewish homeland. Trip highlights include discussions with top-ranking military and political officials, a visit to the Biblical wine route near Beit Shemesh, a stopover in the city of Safed and other sites. Senior Health Insurance Assistance Program is available at many different locations in Potomac, Rockville and Bethesda to help with medicare and other insurance companies. Individual appointments and information are available by calling 301-590-2819.

Potomac Seniors gather on Tuesdays and enjoy a wide range of activities together between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The program offers entertainment, health screening and education, chair exercises, crafts, informational speakers, counseling on issues of interest to seniors, occasional intergenerational activities, theme parties and lots of camaraderie. Mini-trips to local points of interest add another dimension to the wide range of possibilities offered at Potomac Seniors.

All classes are offered at the Potomac Community Center, 11315 Falls Road, Potomac. For any questions call the Senior Programs Office at 301-468-4540.

* Mondays:

10:15 a.m.-11:15 a.m.: Tai Chi Chaun for Seniors. Designed to improve balance and flexibility and enhance muscle tone, this class is led by Mr. C. L. Young, a volunteer instructor with much experience. Join this free class merely by showing up. It's that easy!

* Tuesdays:

10 a.m.-10:30 a.m.: Coffee and Camaraderie. Join the group for a time of pleasant social interaction, lively conversation and fun.

10:15 a.m.-11 a.m.: Senior Shape. Designed especially for seniors, the 45 minute exercise class focuses on increasing strength and muscular endurance for the activities of daily lives. The program includes health education and periodic blood pressure screening. Suburban Hospital and Kaiser Permanente sponsor this program in cooperation with MCRD. Permission from your health care provider is required before beginning this course. To register and obtain consent form, call 301-896-3939.

10:30 a.m.-11 a.m.: Chair Exercises. Follow along with this video class for a session of fun and fitness.

10:30 a.m.-11 a.m.: Blood Pressure Screening. The second Tuesday of every month (sponsored by Suburban Hospital).

11 a.m.-11:30 a.m.: Senior Health Insurance Assistance Program. Generally the second Tuesday of every month, Arnold Lear brings information on services available to seniors living in Montgomery County. He is also available for private consultations.

11 a.m.-12 p.m.: Activities. Check the calendar to see what's planned.

12 p.m.-12:30 p.m.: Lunch. Bring your own and enjoy good company.

12:30 p.m.-2 p.m.: Program. Varied and enjoyable-check the calendar.

Seniors may use the weight and exercise room at Potomac Community Center free of charge between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Tuesdays by registering (ask at the center desk). Seniors who choose to use the exercise room on other days or hours will have to purchase the regular weight room membership. Weight room memberships provide access to other Montgomery County community center weight and exercise rooms.

Seniors and their caregivers can get diet and nutrition questions answered by a registered dietician by calling the county's free Senior Nutrition Hotline at 240-777-1100 on Wednesday mornings from 9-11 a.m. Information is available on topics such as how to lower sodium intake, how to find reliable nutrition information on the Internet and how to choose the healthiest cooking oil. Bilingual assistance is also available.
