Getting to Know...Bill Maykrantz

Profile

Bill Maykrantz is a former School Board member and is involved in numerous community organizations. He and his wife, Marty, are spending some time in Biloxi with Habitat for Humanity rehabilitating homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.

Name: William (Bill) Maykrantz Sr.

Town/Neighborhood: Sterling/Sterling Park.

Years in the Community: 38.

Occupation/Position: Retired. Previously served as data center director for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and operations director for Computer Based Systems Inc. Also served three years as an officer in U.S. Marines.

Achievements: Raised three children who are now raising their families and all are active in Loudoun County. President of Sterling Park Jaycees, chairman of Loudoun County School Board, president of LARC Board of Directors, founder and coordinator of local Neighborhood Watch.

Family: Wife, Marty; children, Billy, Debi, Laurie; grandchildren, Trey, Ashley, Dylan.

What do you like or dislike about your community?: I like the convenience of being able to get to all services without driving long distances and used to like the closeness, friendliness and "work together" attitude of our community; but this has changed. I dislike the deterioration of our community and the lack of effective tools to stop it.

Favorite local restaurant/place: That's Amore, Olive Garden, Cheng's.

Sports Interests/Activities/Hobbies: High-school football (Park View and Dominion), college and pro football, fishing, traveling, puzzles and reading.

Community Ties: In the past Ñ Sterling Park Jaycees, School Board, school PTAs and booster clubs, church organizations. Currently Ñ Loudoun Habitat for Humanity, Loudoun Sheriff's Auxiliary, Neighborhood Watch, LARC, Knights of Columbus, church, Holiday Coalition.

Community Concerns: Sterling Park does not have a homeowners association. The overall appearance and quality of life is deteriorating as houses grow older and community values/lifestyles change. As Loudoun grows and greater demands are placed on county government, seniors are being taxed out of the county.

Community Ideas: Improve zoning laws and enforcement to protect community appearance and quality of life. Place a cap on real estate taxes for seniors. Shift the burden of "nice to have facilities and services" back to the communities rather than placing the burden on all Loudoun citizens.

Personal Goals: Continue to be close to my family. Continue to serve Loudoun through civic and charitable organizations. Continue to travel.

What community "hidden treasure" should more people know about?: The history of Loudoun and especially the eastern part before development destroys it.
