Gas Leak Closes Spring St.
Spring Street was closed Monday, Jan. 9., from Herndon Parkway to Spring Park Place due to a gas leak. While some local traffic was allowed through, other cars were diverted. The street reopened about an hour later.
Fire Causes $300K in Damages
Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a house fire Sunday, Jan. 1, at approximately 11:45 p.m., in a housing development near Frying Pan Park. The single-family home is located at 13018 Farthingale Drive.
Upon arrival, firefighters saw heavy flames coming from the garage of the two-story, split-foyer home. An additional alarm was dispatched, bringing more than 60 emergency personnel to the scene. After using aggressive tactics, firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in approximately 40 minutes. No one was home when the fire broke out. No injuries were reported. Damage is estimated at $300,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Welcome to Herndon, Jan. 21
The "Welcome to Herndon" event, a short program designed to acquaint new residents with the Herndon community, is Saturday, Jan. 21, from 10-11 a.m. The program provides an overview of town services and government, with an emphasis on ways new residents can get involved in the community. All residents of the town are encouraged to attend the event at the Neighborhood Resource Center, 1086 Elden St. in the Dulles Park Shopping Center.
Councilman Appointed to Committee
The Virginia State Corporation Commission Division of Utility and Railroad Safety recently appointed Town Council member Dennis D. Husch to the Damage Prevention Advisory Committee. This is Husch's second term on the committee. Each term is two-years.
The advisory committee reviews reports of probable violations of the Underground Utility Damage Prevention Act, including the process of marking utilities and recommends enforcement actions to the commission. The committee also addresses important issues concerning the damage prevention program in Virginia.
Husch has served as a member of the Herndon Town Council since 1994 and has been a resident of Herndon for more than 20 years. He serves as chair of the council's Level of Service Ad-Hoc Committee and has served on the council's Finance Ad-Hoc Committee. Husch also serves as the town's representative to the Transportation Coordinating Council, World Congress for Information Technology, and the YMCA Community Advisory Task Force. He also served on the Commonwealth's Joint Commission on Science and Technology committee. Husch holds a B.S. in Business Administration.
Call for Candidates
The election of the Town of Herndon's 2006-2008 mayor and Town Council will be Tuesday, May 2. Any individual interested in becoming a candidate for office of mayor or Town Council may download a candidate informational bulletin and candidate forms from the Virginia State Board of Elections' Web site: www.sbe.virginia.gov/cms/.
The Web site contains updated bulletins specific to each office type. In addition to the qualifications, bulletins also provide candidates with information they will need to run for office, forms and filing requirements. Deadline dates for candidate declarations, petitions and other candidate forms also are posted on the Web site on page two of the "May 2006 Elections Candidacy Requirements for Town Offices."
