Darwin Day. The Northern Virginia Ethical Society celebrates Feb. 12, Darwin Day, with a presentation by Christine Miller of Johns Hopkins University on "Darwin's Theory: Is It Put to Good Use Today?" Epiphany Half-Day Retreat. Author and inspirational mentor Suzanne Farnham is leading a quiet, half-day retreat on Feb. 18 at Church of the Holy Comforter in Vienna to close the season of Epiphany. Farnham is the founder of Listening Hearts Ministries and co-author "Listening Hearts: Discerning Call in Community" and "Grounded in God: Listening Hearts Discernment for Group Deliberations." Through meditation, the retreat will give each person the opportunity to explore scripture from his/her personal perspective. Jewish Meditation classes are being offered at Congregation Beth Emeth, Herndon, for six sessions on Sundays from Feb. 26 through April 2. Classes provide a safe environment where students will learn meditative techniques from Jewish tradition to bring about deep relaxation and new spiritual experiences. A Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper will be held at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in McLean from 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m. on Feb. 28. Lent begins the next day with Ash Wednesday services at noon and 7:30 p.m. Ashes will be distributed, and communion will be served. During Lent, every Wednesday evening from March 1 through April 5, a light Lenten supper will be served at 6 p.m., followed by short evening services at 7:30 p.m. for prayer and reflection on "Until He Comes Again," Redeemer's theme for the season. A program using music, drumming, movement, song and prayer seeks to bring communities together as part of everyday life.
