Sock Hop

Friday night, Sept. 30, the Washington Dulles Hilton in Herndon will host Gottaswing dance instructors Sue and Gary Caley as they present an All American Sock Hop. King Cadillac is scheduled to play for the event to benefit people in the New Orleans area through the Red Cross.

The event begins at 8:30 p.m. and will end around midnight. In addition to dancing, the evening will feature a silent auction, snacks, dollar dances, drawings raffles and more.

A sample beginner swing dance class will run from 8:30 to 9 p.m. to get everyone in the mood, '50s attire is strongly encouraged. Admission is $15, with a percentage going to the Red Cross along with all additional money raised going to the Red Cross.

Maude Birthday Celebration

Maude Hair Salon is celebrating its two-year anniversary with a birthday party Saturday, Oct. 1 from 6 to 9 p.m. The family-friendly event will feature spin art, music and other goodies at the store's location in Historic Downtown Herndon. Sewer Reconstruction

A contractor for the Town of Herndon will be rehabilitating the sewer system at the locations listed below. Restoration is necessary to meet current standards and eliminate maintenance problems. The construction will take place during the regular workday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Efforts will be made to complete this project with minimum inconvenience to residents, businesses and motorists. Home Buyer Seminar

A free home buyers seminar will take place at the Herndon Neighborhood Resource Center on Saturday, Oct. 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Learn about home-buying options, the advantages of home ownership, qualifying and applying for a loan and how to establish or restore credit. A certificate from Washington Mutual Home Loans will be given to attendees, which is useful in applying for first home buyer's programs. The Herndon Neighborhood Resource Center is located at 1086 Elden Street (in the Dulles Park Shopping Center). For more information call 703-435-3182.

Vecinos Unidos Board Meeting

The next advisory board meeting of Vecinos Unidos/Neighbors United is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. The location will be the upstairs meeting room at St. Joseph's Catholic Church on 750 Peachtree Street in Herndon. In addition to the regular meeting, there will be a farewell to four Executive Board members: Darryl and Maria Smith, and Chris Griffin and Don Owens. The Smiths will continue to serve as homework tutors at the NRC, while Griffin and Owens will become members of the Advisory Board. Call 703-758-7493 to RSVP.

Pumpkinville Trip

Parents can bring their children to a farm where Pumpkinville has come to life on Tuesday, Oct. 4. Enjoy hayrides, the petting zoo, a three-acre farm play area and all the cider you can drink. The trip includes transportation by 15-passenger van (bring own car seats), unlimited hayrides, animal park, cider, apples and a pumpkin to take home from the pumpkin patch. The van departs from the Herndon Community Center. Cost: $9 for children ages three and older (adults included); $4 for ages two or walking.

October Chamber Events

Business After Hours is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 6, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Residence Inn Marriott, Chantilly Dulles South, 14440 Chantilly Crossing. The focus of this monthly Chamber of Commerce event is to provide local businesses with a relaxed and fun setting where busy people can greet and eat while promoting their business face to face. Fall Foliage Train Excursion

Experience a Herndon tradition and travel to the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad on Saturday, Oct. 15 from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Enjoy the fall foliage with an authentic steam train ride through the mountains of western Maryland. Due to budget cuts, the railroad may be shutting down, so this may be the last chance to go.

The trip includes transportation by motor coach, group leader and train admission. No refunds after Oct. 1. The motor coach departs from the Herndon Community Center. The cost is $52 for adults (includes lunch), $45 for children 13 and under (includes lunch); $45 for adults (without lunch) and $40 for children 13 and under (without lunch). There will be special pick ups from Kendrick Court Senior Apartments and Herndon Harbor House. Teen After-school Program

Teenagers 12 to 17 are invited to the Herndon Community Center for an afternoon of refreshments and a movie — free. Teen Cinema is held the second and fourth Thursday of every month from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. This is a great way to see friends and to make new ones. All movies are rated PG or PG-13.

Mountain Hike

The Herndon Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring a trip to Old Rag Mountain on Saturday, Oct. 8 from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. One of the most spectacular mountains in the Northern Virginia Blue Ridge, Old Rag Mountain is 3,291 ft. in elevation. The level of difficulty of the hike is strenuous (12 and under must be accompanied by an adult). The trip includes transportation by 15-passenger van and park admission. The van departs from the Herndon Community Center. The cost is $9 per person.

Christmas in New York

Spend three days and two nights in the Big Apple. Some new and exciting things to look forward to this year are Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty as well as "Phantom of the Opera" on Broadway.
