The Broad Run Farms area is only accessible by Youngs Cliff Road, a low-lying road subject to flooding by the Potomac River. When the access road is flooded, about 60 homes are inaccessible and subject to flood damage. "Historically, Youngs Cliff Road and a portion of Broad Run Farms have been flooded due to high-water conditions in Broad Run and the Potomac River. Depending on the severity of the event, emergency access has been restricted, isolating the affected area from police, fire and rescue, and emergency medical services," said Tom Trask, Loudoun County Department of General Services.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently conducted a study to access the flood risk and emergency-access issues of the Broad Run Farms area. "This study posits alternatives to mitigate these conditions under various degrees of flooding," Trask said. Loudoun County representatives and the Corps will hold a meeting Thursday, Sept. 29, to explain the purpose and results of the study and answer community members’ questions.
"Besides the results of the study, the county will discuss substantive comments received to date and provide for additional comments on the floor, Trask said. "A tabulation of the results of the survey included with the executive summary will be provided."
The meeting will be held at 7 p.m., at the Eastern Loudoun Regional Library, 21030 Whitfield Place in Sterling. "It is important for the residents to have an opportunity to ask questions and provide substantive input on the identified alternatives for emergency access," Trask said.
