Four Herndon-area youths competed earlier this month in a motorcross event to benefit the Children's National Medical Research Center for Pediatric Cancer Research in Washington, D.C.
Christopher Barker, 16, Alex Baker, 16, Matt Barker, 14, and Billy Deweese, 14, made up the team "2 Wheels 4 Life" and raced in the "MX for Life" event at The Landing MX Motorcross Racing Complex in Maryland.
The boys were able to raise $1,245 for the event, and added that total to the other 30 teams competing, resulting in a final donation of $25,376.
"We've all been riding motorcross for about four years and saw this race as an opportunity to help make money for a really good cause and have fun at the same time," Christopher Barker said in an e-mail.
The team placed 16th out of the 31 teams competing and completed 158 laps in 10 hours, he said.
The youths decided to participate in the event because the Barker brothers, Christopher and Matt, have a cousin who was born with a malignant brain tumor, said Christopher Barker.
"We all feel that we're really saving little kid's lives," he said.
