Baby Susan Anne Catherine Torres, born three months premature to a severely brain-damaged Arlington woman, died of heart failure on Sunday.
The baby girl died after emergency surgery to repair a punctured intestine at the Virginia Hospital Center. Her health had declined rapidly in recent days, hospital officials said.
The mother, 26-year-old Susan M. Torres, had been 17 weeks pregnant when she suffered a stroke due to a cancerous brain tumor. She was removed from life support following the delivery of her 27-week-old child.
The family released a statement on Sunday night:
“With great sadness, we are asking for your prayers for the repose of the soul of 5-week-old baby Susan Ann Torres. Please include in your prayers a request for the peace and comfort of her family, especially Jason Torres, who has had a very difficult past several months.”
Susan M. Torres worked as a researcher at the National Institute of Health and lived with her husband Jason in Arlington.
