Matthew Cutler of Herndon was awarded the Bronze Congressional Medal by Hon. Frank Wolf of the 10th District Oct. 6. The Congressional Award is based on service to the community, personal development and fitness.

Matthew, son of Michael and Christine Cutler, is a senior at Oakton High School. He is an Eagle Scout, a member of the Oakton High School Marching Band and president of the Oakton Model United Nations Club.

Carmin “Chuck” Caputo is the vice-chair of the Northern Virginia Community College Board for the 2005-2006 term, representing Fairfax County. Caputo is a retired federal Senior Executive Service member with 38 years of experience as a telecommunications engineer. Caputo joins 10 other individuals in overseeing the governance of Northern Virginia Community College.

Carl and Charlotte Peed of Oak Hill have been appointed to serve on the East Carolina University's Parents Association's governing council, which represents over 30,000 parents. The forty-member council serves as a liaison between parents and the university, advocating student success and welfare at the university while being represented on the university's advancement organizations.

Carl currently serves as Director of COPS at the United States Department of Justice. Charlotte serves as a Deputy Director at the Transportation Security Administration. The Peeds' daughter, Sally, is a graduate of Oakton High School and is currently a junior at ECU majoring in international business.

Army 2nd Lt. Matthew H. Park has entered the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md. He will be matriculated, trained and prepared to serve as a physician in the Army, Navy, Air Force and the Public Health Service to meet the combat and peacetime medical needs of the Armed Forces.

In addition to free tuition, students at USUHS receive free books, equipment and instruments, and upon graduation they incur a seven-year active duty military service commitment.

The medical school curriculum includes a concentration of preventive medicine, primary care and emergency medicine, which are directly related to military medicine, tropical diseases, disaster medicine, military readiness and adaptation to extreme environments.

Park will graduate in 2009. He is the son of John J. and Sarah C.K. Park of Riggs Road, Fredericksburg, Va. His wife, Christina, is the daughter of Bruce W. and Karen M. Robinette of Van Buren Street, Herndon. The lieutenant graduated in 2001 from Herndon High School, and earned a bachelor's degree in 2005 from the University of Virginia.
