“Stories from the Attic” is the title of an eight-class series for seniors on memoir writing to begin Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 10:30 a.m. at Langston-Brown Senior Center, 2121 N. Culpeper St. The weekly classes are conducted by Ellen Herbert, MFA, award-winning, published writer and writing teacher. Recruiting parties are set for both the Senior Singers Chorale and the New Horizons Band in September. The Arlington Agency on Aging and the Arlington Commission on Aging are continuing their outreach campaign to educate Arlington's older residents, their caregivers, and the professionals who serve them regarding the new Medicare prescription drug benefit (Medicare Part D), which starts January 1, 2006. All Medicare beneficiaries will need to learn about Medicare Part D this year, so that they can make a decision whether or not to take this option. People with lower incomes may qualify for "Extra Help," which could assist them in paying the premiums, deductibles, and co-pays for Medicare Part D. To learn more about Medicare Part D, plan to attend this informal question and answer session, "Ask a Medicare Specialist," Sept. 29, 1:30 p.m. at the Warren G. The Office of Senior Adult Programs is sponsoring a community service project to assist the Arlington Chapter of the Salvation Army. SCAT, Senior Center Adult Transportation, is a taxi service for Arlington seniors, 55 and older, to go to senior centers for a roundtrip cost of $4. Seniors are eligible by registering with the Office of Senior Adult Programs (OSAP) and paying an annual fee of $10. Fan Care Program. The Arlington Agency on Aging has electric fans available for Arlington residents age 60 and older whose maximum annual income for a single person is $14,355, or $19,245 for a two-person household.
