Eighteen students from Fairfax County Public Schools have been named 2006 National Achievement Scholarship Program semifinalists, in an academic competition for Black American high school students, conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
The 2006 FCPS National Achievement Scholarship semifinalists are: Sabir Sultan of Edison High School; Ashley Griggs of Herndon High School; Jenaye Johnson of Lake Braddock Secondary School; Maria Booker of Mount Vernon High School; Alexander Meyers of Robinson Secondary School; Oluseyi Ayorinde, Alexis Cook, Nicole Gates, Ruth Kidane, Lindsey Leake, Christina Powell, Stephany Reaves, Robert Yamoah, and Darren Ziegler of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology; Rodney Perry of Westfield High School; Lauren Brown and Kimberly Cosby of West Springfield High School; and Mercedes Bent of Woodson High School.
The semifinalists will compete for more than 800 Achievement Scholarship awards, worth $2.5 million, to be awarded next spring. The awards will be supported by corporate organizations, foundations, professional associations, and funds from the NMSC. To be considered for a scholarship, semifinalists must advance to the finalist level by fulfilling additional requirements.
The Herndon Homecoming Parade will be held Oct. 22, beginning at 9:30 a.m. The annual parade consists of entries from area schools, civic organizations and some area businesses. The theme is 'Film Festival' and the parade will start on Elden Street at the intersection of Sterling Road, proceeding down Elden Street to left on Lynn Street and ending at Center Street. The reviewing stand will be at Town Hall Square with the Town Council, Town Manager and Police Chief serving as judges. The Treble Clefs will perform before and after the parade.
