The Arlington Agency on Aging and the Arlington Commission on Aging are continuing their outreach campaign to educate Arlington's older residents, their caregivers, and the professionals who serve them regarding the new Medicare prescription drug benefit (Medicare Part D), which starts January 1, 2006. All Medicare beneficiaries will need to learn about Medicare Part D this year, so that they can make a decision whether or not to take this option. People with lower incomes may qualify for "Extra Help," which could assist them in paying the premiums, deductibles, and co-pays for Medicare Part D. To learn more about Medicare Part D, plan to attend this informal question and answer session, "Ask a Medicare Specialist," Sept. 29, 1:30 p.m. at the Warren G. Stambaugh Department of Human Services building, 3033 Wilson Boulevard, 7th floor, Arlington. The building, located across from the Clarendon Metro stop, is fully accessible. CyberSeniors.org will hold computer classes at the Lee Senior Center, 5722 Lee Highway and the Langston-Brown Senior Center, 2121 Culpepper St. Each course topic is taught in four one-hour sessions over a two-week period of time. $30. The Office of Senior Adult Programs is sponsoring a community service project to assist the Arlington Chapter of the Salvation Army. Arlington seniors can get a private fitness assessment and a personally designed exercise program by a certified fitness professional at Langston-Brown Senior Center, 2121 N. Culpeper St. Assessment determines level of fitness for muscle strength, aerobic capacity and body flexibility. Fee is $120 which includes assessment and three sessions with the fitness coach. SCAT, Senior Center Adult Transportation, is a taxi service for Arlington seniors, 55 and older, to go to senior centers for a roundtrip cost of $4. Seniors are eligible by registering with the Office of Senior Adult Programs (OSAP) and paying an annual fee of $10. Fan Care Program. The Arlington Agency on Aging has electric fans available for Arlington residents age 60 and older whose maximum annual income for a single person is $14,355, or $19,245 for a two-person household. Those eligible can receive one fan per cooling season. A short application is required. The Fan Care Program is open from June 1-Sept. 30 or as long as funds last.
