Senior Services of Alexandria unveiled their 2006 calendar Nov. 9 during a ceremony in the Vola Lawson Lobby of City Hall. It was then officially presented to City Council.
As the combined efforts of artists Tom Jennings and Derone DeCesare, the calendar depicts various scenes from Alexandria done in pen-and-ink sketches. While capturing the historic beauty of the area, the cover of the 2006 calendar displays today's busy life along lower King Street.
"We live in a community of tradition and this calendar has in itself become a tradition," Judy Drewry, chair of the Senior Service Calendar Committee, told the 40-plus attendees at the ceremony.
Produced annually since 1980, the calendar is a prime fund-raiser for Senior Services. Selling for $10 each, they are available at Senior Services offices, 121 N. St. Asaph St., as well as at several Old Town shops.
Artists for the calendar are always chosen for their mastery of the pen-and-ink technique. Jennings, who produced eight of the drawings, is a native Washingtonian who specializes in both cartoons and logo designs.
DeCesare, creator of four of the drawings, is an award-winning artist represented in Alexandria by Gallery Peralouth and the Torpedo Factory Art League Gallery. His prints and paintings are featured in The Artist's Illustrated Encyclopedia.
In addition to unveiling their annual calendar, Senior Services used the event to honor outgoing board President William P. Harris and retiring DOT reservationist for the past 22 years, Mary Louise Simpson. "DOT" is the organization's transportation service provided to Alexandrians with disabilities.
Senior Services has been providing aid to Alexandria seniors since 1968. Annually it provides 55,000 meals to homebound seniors, makes reservations for 64,000 van and taxi trips for seniors and disabled, provides employment counseling and referrals to over 350 seniors, and aids over 110 seniors locate in-home assistance.
