Overnight Beltway travelers on I-95, in the vicinity of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project at the Route 1 Interchange, should prepare for heavy traffic impacts this week and possibly into early next week as crews lift the next group of 80-foot-long steel beams across traffic lanes.
This activity, during the overnight hours throughout the weekend, will require the Beltway Inner and Outer loops to be reduced to one lane on the Virginia side of the bridge at that intersection. The remaining one lane on the Outer Loop will be closed periodically for 20 to 30 minute intervals, according to Project officials.
Additionally, both the southbound and northbound Telegraph Road ramps to I-95 North, Beltway Outer Loop, will be closed. Traffic will be detoured during the same overnight hours to Huntington Avenue to northbound Route 1 North to the Outer Loop.
Northbound I-95 Outer Loop motorists are advised that traffic impacts will begin prior to Telegraph Road during the same time period due to overnight Outer Loop closures at the Springfield Interchange Project. That project is scheduled to close two of four lanes on the Outer Loop from Braddock Road to Van Dorn Street. Additional information of the Springfield Interchange Project closures is available at www.springfieldinterchange.com and by calling 877-959-5222.
Travelers are urged to avoid the area by choosing alternate routes. For those who must travel through the affected area, substantial additional law enforcement and safety patrol resources will be deployed in the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project area, official stated. The latest WWB Project traffic information can be found at www.wilsonbridge.com or by calling 1-877-463-6992.
Project managers acknowledged that these types of closures will occur periodically as work progresses on the Route 1 Interchange with the Capital Beltway.
