Nearly 1,000 Cabin John Middle School students took part in the Fannie Mae Foundation's Help the Homeless Walk Oct. 28 to raise money to fight homelessness.
Organizer Charlotte Corbett and other parents talked with the students about homelessness before they donned Walkathon shirts and walked a course circling the school along Bells Mill and Gainsborough roads.
The event raised $7,240, for three groups: Bethesda Cares, the National Center for Children and Families which runs Greentree Shelter in Bethesda, and From Streets to Skills.
The Fannie Mae Foundation provided about $2,000 in bonus grants in recognition of the nearly 434 students that registered in advance for the walk.
Another $434 from the Foundation — $1 per registered student — will go specifically to victims of Hurricane Katrina.
