The Goose Creek District of the Boy Scouts of America honored Rod Huebbers as the 2005 Loudoun County Good Scout of the year. The award dinner was held Oct. 27, at the Belmont Country Club. Huebbers is senior vice president of Inova Health Systems and administrator of Inova Loudoun Hospital.

The Good Scout Award is given every year based on the following credo, "You are put here to do something for your fellow men and to take an active part in your community and its issues." The National Capital Area Council has created this award for presentation to a person who exemplifies these ideals.

Past recipients of this award were George Atwell, Joe Boling, Del. Joe May, Jock Humphrey, Arlyn Black, Bob Sevila and Leonard S. "Hobie" Mitchel.

On Saturday, Oct. 29, members of the Loudoun County Fire-Rescue System celebrated the future expansion of the Fire-Rescue Training Facility at the groundbreaking ceremony, including members of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors, representatives from the Virginia Department of Fire Programs, County Staff and the Loudoun County Fire-Rescue System.

The planned facility will be located on approximately 35 acres, part of the former Shellhorn Property. The facility will include among other areas, a burn building to conduct live exercises and a high-bay building to conduct training during all weather conditions. The center's design features individual training areas to allow two or more activities to take place at the same time. The facility is used to train Loudoun County Fire and Rescue career staff and members of the Loudoun County volunteer fire-rescue system.

In August 2005, the Board of Supervisors authorized the awarding of a $6.4 million contract to SMCI for the project. Project funding is supplemented through a $430,000 grant award from the Virginia Department of Fire Programs. Construction of the facility is expected to be completed by August 2006.

Effective Jan. 1, Rod Huebbers will assume the responsibilities of executive vice president for Inova’s East Region, which includes Inova Mount Vernon Hospital, Inova Alexandria Hospital and the Inova HealthPlex in Lorton. In addition, effective Jan. 1, H. Patrick Walters will assume the responsibilities of executive vice president for Inova’s West Region, which includes Inova Loudoun Hospital, Inova Fair Oaks Hospital and Inova’s Continuum of Care. As executive vice presidents, both will oversee their geographic regions with respect to health-care service quality and health-service development.

Huebbers’ affiliation with Inova Health System began in March, 2005. After Inova’s successful merger of Loudoun Hospital Center with Inova he became a senior vice president with Inova Health System, administrator of Inova Loudoun Hospital. His duties have included identifying community health-care needs, introducing innovative service concepts and expanding community health care access.

Walters joined Inova Health System as the administrator of Alexandria Hospital following its successful merger with Inova in 1997. His duties have included hospital leadership positions at Inova Health System hospitals and overseeing Inova’s regional development.

For the second year in a row, Loudoun Volunteer Services (LVS) has had success with Make a Difference Day, supporting the Community Holiday Coalition with generous donations from the community.

Last year, LVS exceeded its goal of 50 baskets by collecting more than 400. This year's goal was 500 and 660 were collected. LVS selected the Holiday Coalition as its service project and asked for volunteers to help collect household items to be distributed during the holidays. Items for three suggested baskets were delivered by dozens of families, Girl Scout troops and religious and other organized groups.

This year, for the first time, LVS sponsored a Volunteer Fair in conjunction with Make a Difference Day that included 20 nonprofit organizations seeking volunteers. The intent was to give those dropping off their baskets an opportunity to learn about other volunteer opportunities.
