While teams are still forming and being accepted for Herndon's second annual Relay for Life, other applications are still waiting to be filled.
In addition to the overnight relay, created to raise money and awareness for the fight against cancer, survivors of cancer and those who lost the battle are honored.
Through a luminaria ceremony, votive candles in paper bags lining the athletic track are lit while the name of each person is read.
Because the American Cancer Society and event planners want to give everyone the opportunity to pay tribute to their loved ones and help fight the disease, Herndon's Relay for Life organizers are encouraging community members to purchase a luminaria in honor or memory of a friend or relative.
During the ceremony the candles will be lit along the Herndon High School track and everyone is invited to attend the service, even if they are not walking in the event.
Volunteers will be available to light candles for those who cannot attend the event.
Relay for Life is scheduled for June 11 to 12, with the ceremony beginning at 9:30 p.m.
