As a part of Neighborhood Celebration month, members of the community are encouraged to organize events during May to promote community spirit or neighborhood beautification.
This month neighbors have done everything from block parties and barbecues to clean-ups and yard sales.
Initiated by the town's Cultivating Community Initiative, an ongoing program to enrich the quality of life in town, the month of May was dedicated toward strengthening neighbor relationships.
This year's events ranged from the Townes at Herndon Center's yard sale and Waterford Park's "A Taste of Waterford Park Neighborhood Picnic" to Alabama Drive's Tree Care Seminar/block party and Crestview's yard sale and clean up day.
Other participating neighborhood's included a Grace Street Celebration and a pool opening for the Four Seasons Recreation Association.
As one of the two scheduled block parties, neighbors of the Dumbarton Square area celebrated Saturday May 21 with food and fun.
Mayor Michael O'Reilly and council member Harlon Reece were in attendance for the event, which produced a turnout that ran almost two hours after its scheduled end time.
Because there were a lot of children present, O'Reilly and Charlie Waddell, Dumbarton Square Home Owner's Association president, started a soccer game.
Although the game was finally called after a 2 to 2 tie, O'Reilly and Waddell agreed it was a great way to celebrate the sunshine.
In addition to the Dumbarton Square barbecue, O'Reilly said the Alabama Square turnout was strong and representatives from the town and county were present to answer landscaping questions.
