Meredith Richardson and Kathryn Shaw, two Herndon Middle School students, made 26 Peterson-style bluebird nest boxes for the town.
Presenting them at the April 12 public hearing, the two young women gave the bird houses to the Town Council and town forester John Dudzinsky.
Richardson and Shaw made the birdhouses as a part of a community service project for the National Junior Honor Society, taking more than 20 hours each to build the gifts.
Specifically designed for Eastern bluebirds, the houses will be placed in the parks and along the trails in Herndon, with one being placed at Herndon Middle.
Because bluebirds are not as common as they used to be, Richardson and Shaw hope by providing nest boxes the bluebird population in town will increase.
