Task Force Reviews Haul Routes

Vouchers for car washes?

Frustrated that the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project is leaving dust all over the car? The Virginia Department of Transportation has the answer — $16 car wash vouchers from Yates Car Wash, 1018 N. Henry St., Alexandria.

One of the items on the agenda for Monday night's meeting, the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Task Force offered area residents, on a first-come, first-served basis, the vouchers that are valid now through Nov. 15.

"Specific streets have been identified as more likely to be affected by construction dust. These include the designated construction haul route," according to a project announcement.

A minimum of four car wash vouchers per address are available monthly. Residents may contact Dee Sears at the Project office at 703-329-0300 to determine their eligibility if they live along any designated haul route.

Other items discussed by the Task Force during the meeting at Lyles-Crouch Traditional Academy included:

* A change in the haul routes due to the recently commenced stormwater sewer construction project leading from Pitt Street to the river. The primary impact is on steel deliveries and parking on Franklin and South Royal streets.

* The Hunting Creek Area Plan and the potential of acquiring affordable housing in that area upon completion of the bridge project.

* Completion of lighting modifications at Hunting Towers and the schedule for energizing the new street lights on South Washington Street in the area of the Beltway overpass.

* Night work at Jones Point Park to construct concrete decks on the Virginia approach spans.

* Status of efforts to alleviate traffic congestion occurring on South Patrick Street weekday evenings and on South Washington Street during morning rush hours.

* A review of the progress on acquisition of the Freedmen's Cemetery and Witter Recreation Fields. This also tied in with a report on the status of the design for a South Washington Street Gateway.

The Task Force's next meeting was set for June 22 at Lyles-Crouch.
