It seems everywhere you turn these days; someone in Del Ray is making the papers. Our very own Barbara Mancini was in the Washington Post's food section in early May being praised for her exceptional "commitment cakes" and devotion to the neighborhood. Maria Getoff and Peter Hayes (28 E. Howell) will appear in an upcoming Post article about the colorful homes in Del Ray. Last, but certainly not least, Sean Sullivan Kumar, a Del Ray native received his Juris Doctorate last weekend from the T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond and was awarded the Charles T. Norman award for best all-around graduating student. Congratulations to all of our news-makers. You continue to make Del Ray a wonderful place to be able to brag about. Much deserved!
While we're bragging — how awesome was our first First Thursday this month? The weather was beautiful, the cookies were delicious, the bands were rockin' and there were people everywhere enjoying every little bit of our awesome Avenue. Thanks to all of you who came out and especially to everyone who sponsored and participated behind the scenes. Jill Erber (Cheesetique), Lola Capps (Chrysalis Chiropractic), and Pat Miller (Resident Del Ray Extraordinaire) and the PWBA have successfully outdone themselves again. Excellent work, Team!
Other Diggity Del Ray venues making news: Los Tios is celebrating all month its 25 years of being on the Avenue. Stop in for daily giveaways, live music on the weekends and piñata games for kids on Sundays from noon to 2 p.m. and — The Caboose is now open for dinner, so stop by.
Don't forget this Saturday the 21st is Cinema Del Ray. Grab your blanket and head on down to the Mount Vernon Rec Center field for a fun-filled evening. At 7 p.m. the Alexandria Employee's Chorus will entertain you with beautiful music. Then stay for the viewing of "Shrek." We will have popcorn and sodas for sale with all proceeds going to the Del Ray Citizens Association. Come and enjoy an evening under the stars with your neighbors.
And on the 22nd, the Alexandria Community Rowing Club will christen the Nancy Dunning women's eight, a new Vespoli M2, at a ceremony with a reception to follow. Everyone is invited to attend. The ceremony and reception will be held at the boathouse at 1 Madison St.
There's something for everyone on the Avenue. Get out and enjoy!
