Foley Turns 99
A few weeks ago Margaret Foley of Reston celebrated her 99th birthday with family and friends. Foley, born April 21, 1906 in Ballinameen, County Roscommon, Ireland, was one of nine children, six of whom eventually came to the U.S. She
arrived in New York in 1927, and lived in and around New
York City for nearly 50 years until settling in Virginia in 1977.
For six years Foley has been a resident of Cameron Glen Care Center in Reston.
Bike to Work
The folks at Washington Area Bicyclist Association want people to sign up for Bike to Work Day March 20. Hundreds of area commuters, instead of pumping gas into their cars, will meet up at Reston Town Center ready to exercise, committed to pumping pedals to get to work. Many companies will be participating in the company challenge, which awards a free lunch catered by Whole Foods Market to the company that has the most participants. The U.S. Geological Survey has won the event the past three years. The event will be March 20, at the Reston Town Center Pavilion, from 6:30-9 a.m.
Reston Relay for Life
In the fight against cancer Reston Relay For Life, one of American Cancer Society’s signature fund-raisers, has issued an official call to all cancer survivors. The event, which raised more than $375,000 in 2004, takes place May 21-22, at South Lakes High School. The event recognizes survivors for their courage by honoring them with a special dinner and dessert reception and the touching “Survivors Victory Lap,” a victorious walk around the high school track.
One of Northern Virginia’s most recognizable community events, this year’s Relay is “retro,” with emphasis on the 1980s. Teams consisting of eight to 15 people creatively raise money for the cause and walk/run/jog throughout the day and night relay style, while enjoying live entertainment, guest speakers, great food and cancer education.
The highlight of the Reston Relay For Life is the luminaria candle-lighting ceremony, where members of the community are given the opportunity to light candles in remembrance of those who have lived with cancer.

Sallie Mae, Leader in Charitable Donations
Sallie Mae, a student loan company headquartered in Reston, contributed $31 million to charity last year, more than any corporate donor in the Washington area. In the last two years, Sallie Mae has contributed nearly $30,000 to Reston organizations, including Forest Edge Elementary, Reston Interfaith, Reston Youth Baseball and the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce.
Lake Anne Revitalization Moves Forward
This month residents and community stakeholders will participate in seven focus groups and a public meeting to share their thoughts on Lake Anne revitalization. The economic study released last March marked the completion of Phase One. The next phase of the project will focus on engaging Lake Anne residents and community stakeholders to shape the direction of development in the area. The focus groups will be held between May 17 and May 23. The larger public meeting is scheduled for May 24. A three-day community design charette is scheduled for June.
