The first week in May recognizes National Correctional Officers and Employees Week and on Tuesday, May 3, the Sheriff's Office announced their Corrections/Court Services Deputy and Supervisor of the Year.
Deputy John Graham was selected as employee of the year by his peers within the division because of his dedication, professionalism and exemplary performance as a deputy sheriff assigned to the Corrections/Court Services Division.
Graham has been a member of the Sheriff's Office for five years and is assigned to the Adult Detention Center.
Also recognized for her efforts as a supervisor was Sgt. Kathy Kresge who oversees the agency's Work Release Center. Kresge has been with the agency for nearly 23 years.
The Sheriff's Office Corrections Division consists of employees from the Adult Detention Center, Courts Security, Civil Process and Work Release. There are a total of 128 employees in the division.
Nicholas J. Mangus has been awarded an Air Force ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) college scholarship. The cadet was selected on the basis of comprehensive tests scores, high-school scholastic achievement, school officials' evaluations, extra-curricular activities and community involvement. The scholarship is designed to cover the cost of tuition, textbooks, laboratory and incidental fees, and a non-taxable monthly stipend during the school year.
Upon graduating from college and completing the ROTC program, the cadets are commissioned as second lieutenants in the Air Force. The new lieutenants select and enter various career fields to train as pilots, navigators, engineers, medical, personnel, business management fields and special operations.
He is the son of Lt. Col. Nicholas M. and Mary G. Mangus of Potomac Falls. Mangus is a 2005 graduate of Dominion High School, Sterling.
Del. Tom Rust accepted an appointment to represent the commonwealth of Virginia on the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB), the nationÕs first interstate compact for education. Rust, who was appointed by Virginia House of Delegates Speaker William J. Howell, replaces retiring House Education Committee Chairman Jim Dillard of Fairfax. The SREB assists state leaders by directing attention to key issues in education policy, by compiling and analyzing data, conducting broad studies and initiating discussions that help states and institutions form long-range plans, actions and policy proposals. Rust will be joined on the board by Del. Bob Tata of Virginia Beach.
Bruce W. Shafferman, who will become the principal of Lowes Island Elementary on July 1, also will serve as the president-elect of the Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals starting on the same date. The Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals is a professional organization of approximately 1,200 members. At the completion of his term as president-elect, Shafferman will serve a one-year term as president beginning on July 1, 2006. Shafferman has served on the Board of Directors for the Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals for seven years as the Piedmont Zone director in Central Virginia. He has been a principal in Bedford County for 20 years.
