Although in its 16th year, Herndon's Farmer's Market will have noticeable changes on its scheduled opening day May 6.
The most significant of those changes will be the event's new location — still in historic downtown — but now on Lynn Street next to the red W&OD caboose.
In addition, thanks to the approval of Fairfax County, farmer's this year will be able to sell fresh eggs, meats, cheeses and other dairy products.
"We also have two vendors that I think will be selling buffalo meat," said John Dudzinsky, town forester and farmer's market manager.
Dudzinsky said although the meat products will be frozen — due to health regulations — they will be fresh.
"All the goods are required to be sold by the people who produce them," he said of the 14 vendors. "We have some vendors from Pennsylvania, but we have a 125-mile radius restriction that we draw from to make sure people don't travel too far."
Of the vendors Dudzinsky said most are from Madison and King George counties, adding no arts and crafts are allowed, just seasonal vegetables, fruits, herbs, flowers, plants, baked goods, jam and now meat, dairy and eggs.
In addition Fairfax County Master Gardeners will be on hand again this year to offer gardening tips.
Starting July 7 the market will also feature children's fun days until Aug. 11.
Specifically geared toward young children, these events will start at 10:30 a.m. adjacent to the market on Town Hall Square.
There will also be a nature tent featuring snakes, frogs, butterflies and more.
Scheduled to open May 6, the market is expected to run until Oct. 27, from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., every Thursday.
