The Environmental Quality Advisory Council of Fairfax County is seeking a high school student interested in serving on the council from July 2005 through June 2006. As a member of the council, the student will be involved in the process of making decisions and recommendations that impact the environment in the county. High school sophomores or juniors in good standing who are residents of Fairfax County, Clifton, Herndon or Vienna may apply. Homeschooled students may also apply. Applications are available from the science department chair, guidance counselor, social studies chair or principal of each public, private or parochial school in Fairfax County. The Vienna Woman's Club presents its annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, May 18, at 7 p.m., at the Vienna Community Center, 120 Cherry St., S.E., Vienna. Scholarship awards are presented by event's guest speakers. Public is welcome to attend. For more, call 703-281-9747.

A lock-in party for sixth graders takes place Friday, May 20 at 9 p.m. to Saturday, May 21, at 7 a.m., at Club Phoenix Teen Center, 120 Cherry St. S.E. James Madison High School PTSA sponsors a raffle for a chance to win a 2005 Scion xA. Tickets are $35, and proceeds benefit the annual All-Night Graduation Celebration. Only 600 tickets will be sold, and the drawing takes place June 3, provided that a minimum number of 350 tickets are sold. Participants must be 18 or older. Volunteer Fairfax hosts its fourth annual Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute Aug. 8 to Aug. 12, at the Mason District Government Center. PYLI is a five-day institute open to high school students that teaches students an array of leadership skills including team building, project leadership, decision making and diversity training. Benjamin Schwank of Vienna recently won a top honor at the 20th Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair at Randolph-Macon College.
