Students played and competed in an egg-run outside while German School parents, kids, and other community members shopped at the school's annual Easter Bazaar March 19. The bazaar tables included a mix of student-made crafts, parent initiatives and outside vendors including local artists and even a German-style butcher selling sausages.
Downstairs, children enjoyed face-painting, activities and cotton candy while parents had German food and draft beer.
Both German and English could be heard throughout the school, with many families being bi-cultural. The school, which also runs a weekend language academy that is open to the public, hopes that events like the bazaar will draw in not just school families but members of the outside community.
For families associated with the school, "It's kind of a yearly get together for people that don't see each other that much, said Klara Fabina, guidance counselor at the school, where Germans can find many of the foods and crafts they would find at home. But it's also "a very community-feeling event” Fabina said. “It’s grown over the years to include not just the German community but the American community around as well.”
General funds raised by the bazaar will be used to fund new playground equipment for the elementary school, while money from student tables will go to the students' class funds for special activities.
