Goodwin House

For the eighth year, the Goodwin House Foundation has published a beautiful calendar showcasing the artwork of residents of Goodwin House Alexandria and Goodwin House Bailey's Crossroads. Some residents bring with them highly developed artistic skills while others have discovered and developed latent talents under the guidance of the creative arts staff at both facilities. The resident artists from Goodwin House Alexandria featured in the 2005 calendar are Florence Jebe, Kenneth Kimmel, Marguerite Lamond, Betty Lantz, Lillian Moraski and Alice Schmidt. Those from Goodwin House Bailey's Crossroads are Elizabeth Dailey, Herta Hamilton, Bethea Owen, Anne Rechter, Beverly Sumner and Elizabeth Weihe. Martha Allen, Bea Hibbard, Doris Miller, Jackie Mills and Venette Planting collaborated on a "ceramic picnic featuring the usual items found in a picnic lunch." For more information, call Gail Gregory, associate, Goodwin House Foundation at 703-8241587 or e-mail ggregory@goodwinhouse.org.

Our latest exhibition, Chinese Brush Paintings by Genevieve Lynn, has been hung in the Gallery Walk at Goodwin House Alexandria. Ms. Lynn has worked with Chinese brush painting masters and also has a certificate from the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C. She makes her own ink and uses traditional tools, including rice paper. On Feb. 17, she gave a Chinese Brush Demonstration. At that time she discussed her work, showed how she grinds ink for her artworks, did some painting and answered questions from residents.

In recent weeks, those residents who enjoy ballroom dancing or just listening to the music have had ample opportunities. On Feb. 15, Goodwin House Alexandria held its annual Sweetheart Dance with the music supplied by the Night Hawks Swing Band. On Feb. 21, Bill and Willa Cleary, long-time friends of resident Irene Wolgamt, arranged a celebratory concert in honor of Irene's 100th birthday. All residents were invited to join Irene for "A Sentimental Journey" with the Star Dust Dance Band in the Auditorium. On March 11, transportation has been arranged for interested residents to attend Alexandria's Senior Prom jointly hosted by T.C. Williams High School Student Council and the Alexandria Successful Aging Committee. In addition to "dancing and listening" there will be dance exhibitions by the Country Steppers Dance Team.
