Recently, the students in Kathy Young's class at Centre Ridge, took on dual roles as literary agents and book publishers. Each student chose and critiqued a work of fiction as if it were in manuscript form. Acting the literary agent for their manuscript, each student prepared a critical book review and wrote business letters to "publishing companies," made up of their peers, in hopes of having their manuscript published. If a publisher chose their manuscript, the student and the publisher went through the steps of negotiating a contract. The final step was for the publisher and "literary agent" to prepare a presentation for a book fair to an audience of bookstore and book club representatives, their classmates. The activity culminated with the top three books being chosen by the audience as the ones they felt they would like to read. The three books chosen to become bestsellers were books read by Jayla O'Neal, Samantha Freking and Ryan Lawrence.
