<bt>Stacy Darrell Smith of Arlington, whom police had been seeking for nearly two weeks, was arrested Thursday, June 2 at about 11:30 a.m.
Around 12:50 a.m. on Saturday, May 21 two Fairfax County police officers who were patrolling the rear of the Merrifield Plaza shopping center had investigated a vehicle parked near the dumpsters behind 8111 Lee Highway. The officers identified themselves and began to speak to the driver. According to police, the driver, Smith, put the SUV in reverse and tried to leave. Police said the officers attempted to stop him, but Smith put the car in drive and drove away at a high rate of speed, dragging one of the officers. The second officer shot at the car in an attempt to stop Smith. The first officer was able to free himself from the vehicle and fell to the ground as Smith left the scene. Minutes later, responding units discovered the vehicle unoccupied nearby. The officer had non life-threatening injuries and was treated and released. There was no indication that the vehicle was hit by the bullets.
Officers developed information on Smith's whereabouts and conducted surveillance which led to his arrest on June 2. Smith was seen driving a car and was stopped at the intersection of Braddock Road and Sully Road in the Centreville area. He was taken into custody without incident. He was served with four felony warrants for malicious bodily injury to a law enforcement officer, disregarding a law enforcement officer's command to stop, hit and run and possession of cocaine, as well as a misdemeanor warrant for possession of marijuana and three other outstanding warrants unrelated to this incident. He is being held at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center without bond.
