Herndon children participating in the Safe Haven program have spent their summer months playing computer games, foosball and other special activities to keep them busy while their parents work.
Created April 1, the Safe Haven program is yet another after school assistance program operated by Vecinos Unidos/Neighbors United. Funded through a $75,000 grant from the Eisenhower Foundation, the Safe Haven program was created to mirror the group's Quantum Opportunities program, also funded by the Eisenhower Foundation, where a select number of students come to an apartment after school to get homework assistance and a safe place to stay until their parents are home from work.
Even though school is out, students still need a place to go during the day, so the Safe Haven is open year round. Although many of the Safe Haven children are on vacation with their families or at camps, those still in the neighborhood come to the apartment from 2:30 to 6 p.m. during the week.
