Jung “Helen” Park of Hayfield Secondary won the 8th District Congressional Art Competition sponsored by U.S. Rep. James P. Moran (D-8). Her artwork was part of the Congressional Art Competition Exhibition in the Verizon Gallery of the Ernst Community Cultural Center at Northern Virginia Community College’s Annandale campus through May 31. Helen’s art work was then transferred to the United States Capitol for eight months. Jonathan Tadross received an honorable mention for his work that is also now in the competition show. Their art teacher is Sallye Mahan-Cox.

A team of students representing Keene Mill Elementary School in Springfield recently won highest honors in this year’s third WordMaster Challenge, a national language arts competition entered by more than 225,000 students annually. Competing in the Gold Division of the Challenge, the sixth-grade team tied for fifth place in the nation out of 197 school teams participating at this level and division. The following sixth graders earned perfect scores: Jacob Baldwin, Chris Pan, Tim Barry, Jason Schwartz and Kyle Belfort. The following sixth graders were also recognized for earning near perfect scores: Jimmy Day, Ben Chao, Ruth Rado, Quan Phan, Kristen Malinowski, Julie Burkhardt, Ariane Emerson and Michael Nguyen. The team was coached by teacher Kathy Case.

Amy Kraut, Hayfield Middle School Science Department Chair, was nominated for Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.
