50 Years of Service

American Legion Post 176 celebrates its continuing service to the community.

Founded on June 4, 1955, the American Legion Post 176 in Springfield celebrated its 50th Anniversary earlier this month. Dedicated to "Serving our Community," Post 176 has come a long way since its founding date with the help of its many honorary commanders and leaders. It is now considered the largest post in Virginia and is made up of nearly 2,000 members, 382 of them being World War II Veterans.

"Our 50th Anniversary marks the celebration of our continual involvement in the community," said Post Commander Jim Kampanos. "Our hard work and dedication has allowed our financial status and strong leadership programs to coexist together and grow over the years."

The post has faced up and down periods since its founding date, as the Springfield area has continued to develop. "The area has seen a complete demographic change since its founding date and the post kind of goes with the flow and deals with the community as it is changing," said Pat Patton, who has been a Legion member for 15 years. "While the post has been up and down financially over the years, we are doing great today. The Legion has been a source of great camaraderie for me and I am lucky to have it in my life."

Each year, members of Post 176 contribute extensive volunteer hours to veterans and their families, children and youth programs and programs that support citizenship and patriotism.

"The American Legion Post 176 is a great community partner," said Nancy-jo Manney, executive director of the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce. "Whenever they are needed, whether offering volunteers, banquet space, or parking areas for the community, they are always eager and willing to lend a helping hand. The Springfield community is lucky to have such a dedicated Post serving them."

Post 176 will continue to host its main events this year, which include serving the VA hospitals in the area, conducting blood drives, sponsoring American Legion Baseball and Boy Scout troops, providing comfort and aid to veterans and their families and directly supporting the troops in Iraq. The Post also serves as an active member of the Springfield Inter-Service Club Council.
