Reston YMCA Event
<bt>In an attempt to bring children and families in to experience the health benefits of aquatic programs offered, the Reston YMCA will host Splashdown 2005.
Free and open to the public, the event will be Saturday, Feb. 26, from 2-5 p.m. at the Reston YMCA.
During the open house visitors will have the opportunity to sign up for swim lessons and aquatics programs. Families will also receive a coupon for $25 off all group swim lessons and aquatic programs for spring I and II sessions.
In addition to providing pool games and aquatics demonstrations, prizes will also be given ranging from eight weeks of aquatic classes and a three-month membership to water bottles and inflatable water toys.
<sh>Kids' Night at RCC
<bt>The Reston Community Center is offering a Kids' Night Out, an event where children ages 3 to 5 will spend the night enjoying arts and crafts activities, movies, dancing, games and indoor sports. Snacks and drinks will be provided. The event will take place at RCC Hunters Woods Friday, Feb. 25, from 6:30-10 p.m. The fee is $10 for Reston residents and $15 for all others. Registration may be done in person of by faxing a completed RCC registration form to 703-476-8617.
<sh>Public Speaking for Teens
<hd>The Reston Community Center is offering a class for teens to better their public speaking skills. The class will run from Feb. 27 to March 13, from 1-3 p.m., at RCC Hunters Woods. The class participants will be coached in communication skills that will enable them to better their interviewing skills for college and job interviews in the future, as well as better their presentation skills. They will be challenged to organize their thoughts and respond to difficult questions and make formal presentations to a group. The course is intended for middle- and high-school students, and the fee is $20 for Reston residents and $50 for all others. <sh>Fairfax County Seeks Participation
<bt>Fairfax County invites residents to one of two Community Watershed Forums to learn about issues facing the Difficult Run watershed. The residents are invited to become a part of the process that will determine solutions to flooding, stream bank erosion, water quality and other critical issues in the watershed. The forums will also provide background information to help residents participate in a review of the draft watershed plan to be held in June. The two forums will take place Thursday, March 3, at 7 p.m., at the Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Rooms 9/10, Fairfax, and Saturday, March 5, at 1:30 p.m., at the Langston Hughes Middle School Cafeteria, 11401 Ridge Heights Road, Reston.
<sh>Southgate Center Construction to Begin
<bt>The construction of the Southgate Community Center is approved to begin on March 1. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved the construction plan, which will be paid for by the county. The land the center will occupy belongs to the Reston Association and the RA agreed to lease the land out to Fairfax County for a 99-year period, to build and manage the community center. The pool and the meeting room will be replaced, while the existing basketball and tennis courts will remain. Supervisor Catherine Hudgins (D-Hunter Mill) said the project is a way for Reston to get its share of county recreational dollars.
