7:30 a.m.: Shift meeting (usually at 7 a.m., medic call interfered).

9:20 a.m.: Driver Tie Burtlow, far right, and Hao Sevener memorize town streets.

9:40 a.m.: Assistance call. Reid Lottchea, left, Hao Sevener, center, and Capt. Robert Rhoads assist locked out resident.

10 a.m.: Work out.

Noon: Shower/lunch (interrupted)

12:30 p.m.: Fire alarm. Capt. Robert Rhoads, left, and Hao Sevener.

1:30 p.m.: Lunch (again)

2:30 p.m.: Rescue drills at fire station.

2:55 p.m.: Watch video about health risks of job.

3:15 p.m.: Herndon High School fire alarm — false alarm.

3:30 p.m.: Reston fire station for oxygen tank refills.

4 p.m.: Shop for dinner. Reid Lottchea, left, Tie Burtlow load cart.

4:30 p.m.: Residential Fire Alarm.

5 p.m.: Cook dinner, rest time.

6 p.m.: Dinner. Steak, potatoes, green beans.

6:40 p.m.: Clean up, free time to study, call families.

7:15 p.m.: Replacement engine arrives; group moves to garage to talk.

8:10 p.m.: Medic assistance call (seizures). Medic/engine respond.

9 p.m.: resting in television room. Tie Burtlow, left, Hao Sevener, relax, watch a movie.

9:55 p.m.: Medic assistance call (chest pains). Medic/engine respond.

10:15 p.m.: Watch movie, start to "unwind."

11:45 p.m.: Bedtime.

4:45 a.m.: Medic assistance call (high fever). Medic/engine respond.

5 a.m.: Back to sleep/have coffee and "reflect" on day.

7 a.m.: Shift C ends, shift B on duty.
